How to Find the Right PTFE Heat Shrink Tube

With so many types of PTFE heat shrink tubing on the market, how do you make the right choice? Remember these simple tips and you'll easily find the right one!

 

1.Consider the Flexibility: Choose the "Elasticity" Based on Your Needs
The core of PTFE heat shrink tubing is its ability to shrink when heated, but different applications require different elasticities. For common applications, choose a 2:1 shrinkage ratio, such as protecting household wiring and circuitry for common machines. For complex shapes, choose a 4:1 shrinkage ratio if you need to cover parts with bends or bulges, such as pipe joints and wire bifurcations.

 

2. Identify Safety Labels
For industrial electrical equipment: Choose one with a "flame retardant certification" (UL94 V-0), meaning it will self-extinguish if ignited, providing greater fire safety.
For medical equipment: Choose one with a "medical safety certification" (USP VI). This material is non-irritating and maintains its properties even after sterilization, making it safer for use in medical equipment.

For export products or applications requiring high environmental protection: Check for "RoHS" or "REACH" markings, indicating the material is free of hazardous substances and compliant for export or use in environmentally friendly equipment.

 

3. Choose the right color based on the intended use.

The color of the heat shrink tubing isn't chosen randomly; it indicates its function.

Transparent or white: Suitable for situations where visibility is crucial, such as when you have a problem with your home wiring. This allows you to check for damage without having to disassemble it, making repairs easier.

Black: Choose black for outdoor equipment (such as outdoor wiring or solar panel wiring), as it resists sun damage and extends its lifespan.

Color: If the equipment has complex wiring, use different colored heat shrink tubing, such as red for high voltage and blue for low voltage, to easily distinguish them during maintenance and reduce the risk of mistakes.

 

4. Don't use the wrong tools: High temperatures are essential for effective shrinkage.

Heat shrink tubing requires high temperatures to activate its shrinking function, but a regular hair dryer won't do the trick.
Recommended tools: Buy an industrial-grade "high-temperature heat gun" (capable of reaching temperatures over 300°C). Hold the heat shrink tubing 3-5 cm away and move it slowly, shrinking it evenly from the ends toward the center, like thermoforming a tube.
Note: Avoid using a lighter directly, as this can cause burns and uneven heating. For large-scale production, such as in a factory, consider an automatic heating machine, which provides faster and more uniform heat.
